When sitting down during calm conditions a life jacket can be worn but is not mandatory, When moving around at sea with a fresh breeze a life jacket will be mandatory. Comfortable life jackets are provided.
Swimming in full sailing gear is almost impossible, a life jacket will inflate within seconds after you hit the water and keep you afloat until you can be saved. This will be trained during the course.
